Accessibility

The museum is housed in a historic building with a modern wing. For the most part, the building is accessible to visitors with disabilities and families with strollers and/or buggies. Unfortunately, access to some parts of the historic building is difficult or impossible. For more information, please refer to the section below on accessibility of the Drents Museum.

Visitors with disabilities
The museum is for the most part accessible to visitors who have difficulty walking or who use wheelchairs or scoot mobiles. Most floors are accessible by lift. Please scroll down for exceptions.

Warning: Some doors and hallways are no wider than 110 cm (3’ 7”). Wheelchair and scoot mobiles wider than 110 cm (3’ 7”) are therefore not allowed in the museum.

Wheelchairs and rollators are available free of charge to anyone who wants them. Since numbers are limited, we recommend making a reservation for a wheelchair or rollator by phone at +31 592 377 773, or ask at the reception desk.

There are two accessible toilets for visitors with disabilities, one at the cloakroom and one at the Bar Brasserie Pingo.

There are also a number of folding chairs on loan, free of charge. These are available at the Info Desk and may be used throughout the museum.

Dedicated Disabled Parking Spaces
Visitors with disabilities who arrive by car, can park at the dedicated disabled parking spaces located on De Brink. Please click here for other facilities for disabled parking in Assen.

Companions
Visitors who are unable to walk through the museum independently may bring a companion, who has free entry if they can show a companion card.

Visually impaired visitors
Large print handouts are available for major exhibitions in the new wing. These are on loan at the Info Desk, as are magnifying glasses.

Assist dogs
Registered guide and assist dogs are welcome at the museum.

Special and quiet opening hours
On Wednesday afternoons, Friday afternoons and Saturday afternoons, it’s not as busy inside the museum. Groups are welcome by appointment on Mondays as well, and before 11.00 am. If you want to know more, please contact the museum by e-mail at reserveringen@drentsmuseum.nl.

Emergencies
The museum has an emergency plan in effect. In case of emergencies, always follow directions given by security staff. The emergency plan covers evacuation of visitors with disabilities.

Rooms with limited acces

The GS Room
The GS Room can only be reached by stairs. This room is used on occasion for events for which no other rooms are available at that time.

The Largest Doll’s House in Holland
The Largest Doll’s House in Holland is located in the historic Ontvangershuis. The ground floor (dining room and kitchen) and first floor (rooms in gold leather and red) are accessible by stair lift. The other two rooms are accessible by stairs only. Please ask our staff members for assistance if you wish to visit the doll’s house in a wheelchair or with a rollator. We recommend that buggies and strollers are left at the bottom of the stairs.

Archaeology
There’s a steep slope in the archaeology department on the ground floor, which leads down on two sides. We recommend bringing a companion, or asking one of our staff members for help.

Mezzanine floor
The mezzanine floor in the main exhibition hall can only be reached by stairs. The mezzanine is sometimes used for minor additional elements of exhibitions.

Wheelchairs and rollators are available at the museum free of charge. Folding chairs are available for loan at the Info Desk. You can borrow these free of charge as well.
