Gratefully accepted: Gustaaf van de Wall Perné (1877-1911)

From 12th May until 27th October 2019 the Drents Museum presents the exhibition Gustaaf van de Wall Perné (1877-1911) – Donation from the collection of M. Rumpff. The most important works of the Dutch artist Gustaaf van de Wall Perné are shown in this exhibition, including the painting Psyche. Additionally works on paper, book bindings, wooden decorative pieces and a piece of furniture are on display. The works of art from Van de Wall Perné provide a unique insight into the spirit of the period and motivation of artists around 1900.

Van de Wall Perné
Gustaaf F. van de Wall Perné was a versatile artist in the Dutch art world around 1900. As a real man of his time, he practiced multiple disciplines. Concurrently he designed book bindings, was an illustrator and painter, created furniture and designed modern women’s clothing. He participated in the most important artistic groups of the time and discussed the development of modern art with artists such as Piet Mondriaan. Van de Wall Perné wrote several articles concerning his ideas. Because he died young and the developments in art continued rapidly, he has become somewhat forgotten. However, his work uniquely illustrates the spirit of the period and motivation of artists around 1900. Through his multi-disciplined activities he demonstrates a nice connection between the visual arts and crafts. Gustaaf’s works emphasise the story that the Drents Museum wants to tell about this period: the fusion of art and society in the new art.

M. Rumpff
Mr. Rumpff’s collection is without doubt the most important and representative collection of the work of Gustaaf F. van de Wall Perné. The collection is varied and consists of paintings, works on paper (drawings, watercolours, original book illustrations and decorations), book bindings, wooden decorative pieces from Gustaaf’s studio home and a piece of furniture. The collection includes a great number of key pieces from the artist’s oeuvre such as the painting Psyche and all the drawings for De Edda. Rumpff has donated his collection to the Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed [Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands], which has provided it to the Drents Museum on long-term loan.

The exhibition Gustaaf van de Wall Perné (1877-1911) – Donation from the collection of M. Rumpff can be seen in the Drents Museum until 27th October 2019.
