2021 can rightly be called a Mexico year. In addition to our major Viva la Frida! exhibition, you can also visit Amstelveen and Leiden for large Mexico-related exhibitions. The kick off of the Mexico year will take place at the end of May in Amstelveen at the Cobra Museum, where you can enjoy Kahlo's intriguing works, as well as works by her Mexican contemporaries and life partner Diego Rivera. The Ethnological Museum in Leiden is displaying beautiful objects from the Aztecs. Both Kahlo and Rivera were inspired by Mesoamerican cultures. They even had a model of an Aztec temple built in the courtyard of their home (The Blue House in Coyoacán, Mexico City, now a museum).

A summer revolution in Amstelveen. From 28 May, the Cobra Museum of Modern Art will show for the first time in the Netherlands the famous Gelman collection of 20th-century Mexican artists, entitled Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera: A Love Revolution. In addition to paintings by Frida Kahlo (Mexico, 1907-1954) and the other Mexican modernists, a selection of drawings and intimate photo portraits of Kahlo and her contemporaries will also be on display. This exhibition offers the opportunity to discover the world of the internationally famous Mexican modernists. On display until 26 September 2021.

The Aztecs: One of the Iconic Civilizations in World History. Builders of colossal pyramids and an empire that spanned much of Central America.
Exactly 500 years ago, this great empire was destroyed by several hundred Spanish settlers and their native allies. This historical fact is the reason for the international exhibition that will visit the Ethnological Museum from 6 August. There are many unique masterpieces from international museums, even items that have never been seen outside Mexico before. The exhibition is suitable for young and old. In the Aztecs lab you can go for varied assignments every day and especially for families there is also an interactive children's route with the snake Coatl as a guide.
