Worldwide icon and cult figure

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is without doubt one of the most celebrated and beloved artists in the world. Her impressive oeuvre, striking appearance, turbulent life and remarkable lifestyle made her a global icon and cult figure.

Entire museum devoted to Frida

In the autumn of 2020 and spring of 2021, the entire Drents Museum will be devoted to Frida Kahlo. The exhibition Viva la Frida! – The life and work of Frida Kahlo consists of three parts. In the introductory section, visitors become acquainted with Frida personally through family photographs and films. The large exhibition gallery features paintings and drawings by the artist from the Museo Dolores Olmedo alongside personal belongings from the Museo Frida Kahlo. And, in the Drents Museum's Abbey Church, visitors can see work by international artists inspired by the Mexican icon. An extensive programme of activities is being developed for Viva la Frida!

World famous Kahlo collections

The collaboration with two of the world's most important Kahlo collections from Mexico offers the Drents Museum the opportunity to tell the complete Frida story. Loans from these museums can be seen together in Viva la Frida! for the first time. Museo Dolores Olmedo (in Mexico City) boasts one of the largest collections of her art, and masterpieces such as Henry Ford Hospital (1932), The Broken Column (1944) and Self-portrait with Monkey (1945) are travelling to Assen. Complementing this is a selection of Kahlo’s clothing, painted corsets and jewellery. These personal possessions come from the Blue House (in Mexico City), now Museo Frida Kahlo, where Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera lived and worked.

Frida as a source of inspiration

Kahlo's work touches on a number of still very topical issues: feminism, gender, politics, life with a disability and cultural identity. These themes are a source of inspiration for many contemporary artists in the areas of the (visual) arts, fashion and music. Beyond Frida - Contemporary Art, Fashion & Music showcases work by international artists who have been touched by Frida Kahlo’s life and oeuvre, such as Marina Abramoviç (Serbia), Shirin Neshat (Iran), Tony Gum (South Africa), Bumi Thomas (United Kingdom/Nigeria) and Yasumasa Morimura (Japan).
