Successful Frida Kahlo exhibition extended by three weeks until 18 April 2022

The Drents Museum in Assen (The Netherlands) has succeeded in extending the major international art exhibition Viva la Frida - Life and art of Frida Kahlo, which was initially scheduled to run until 27 March 2022, by three weeks. The exhibition about the world-famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo opened on 8 October 2021 and attracted over 65,000 visitors to Assen in about 10 weeks before the lockdown. After that, the exhibition was closed for six weeks until it reopened on 26 January. The works and objects from the collections of Museo Dolores Olmedo and Museo Frida Kahlo from Mexico City will remain in the Drents Museum until Monday 18 April 2022 (Easter Monday).

Managing director Harry Tupan: "Due to the success of the exhibition and the temporary closure during the lockdown, we were able to extend the exhibition in close consultation with our lenders in Mexico. Fortunately, we can now offer many Frida fans the opportunity to come and see this unique exhibition.”

The extension of the Frida Kahlo exhibition means that the long-awaited major international archaeology exhibition Under the spell of Mount Ararat - Treasures from Ancient Armenia will now open on Wednesday 11 May 2022. Magnificent objects, such as gold and silver jewellery and bronze statuettes, as well as a unique relic of Noah's Ark, will then come to Assen from Yerevan. Under the spell of Mount Ararat will last until 30 October 2022.

Viva la Frida!
Viva la Frida! focuses on the art and life of Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). For this purpose two of the world's most important Frida Kahlo collections have been brought together for the first time. In Assen, in addition to the famous paintings and drawings of Museo Dolores Olmedo, you can also see her personal belongings from Museo Frida Kahlo, such as her clothes, painted corsets and jewellery. For this exhibition, the Drents Museum is working together with two well-known Frida Kahlo experts: Circe Henestrosa, fashion curator and head of the School of Fashion Lasalle College of the Arts Singapore and Dr Gannit Ankori, director and chief curator of the Rose Art Museum. There is also an extensive fringe programme including lectures, podcasts, festival I AM FRIDA and an art route through the centre of Assen. The accompanying publication Viva la Frida! - Life and art of Frida Kahlo (WBOOKS, 2021) has sold over 10,000 copies.

Viva la Frida! is open Monday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. More information and tickets: https://drentsmuseum.nl/en/frida
