Summer 2019: major exhibition on Italian painting

In the summer of 2019 the Drents Museum will shine a spotlight on the exceptional beauty and quality of 19th-century Italian painting. From 2 June to 3 November 2019 works by artists such as Antonio Mancini, Federico Zandomeneghi, Giovanni Segantini, and Giacomo Favretto will travel to Assen for the exhibition Sprezzatura – Fifty Years of Italian Painting (1860-1910). Mostly from prominent Italian museum collections, many of these paintings have never before been seen in the Netherlands.

Hidden Treasures
Thinking about Italian art instantly brings to mind art from the distant Italian past. The Drents Museum feels that it is high time to present Italian treasures from the second half of the 19th century in the Netherlands. On view in the exhibition Sprezzatura will be works by over forty painters from all over Italy, representative of the leading art academies, movements, and genres. The Italian word 'sprezzatura' has multiple meanings, including ‘virtuosity’ and ‘studied carelessness.’ Doing something with 'sprezzaturra' means acting with such verve and playful nonchalance that it is irresistibly convincing.

Collaboration with Famous Italian Collections
For this exhibition the Drents Museum is working closely with prestigious Italian museums, including the Gallerie degli Uffizi (Florence), the Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Palazzo Pitti (Florence), the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna (Rome), the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Torino (Turin), the Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Venezia a Ca’Pesaro (Venice), and the Collezione Balzan (Badia Polesine).

Sequel to The Glasgow Boys and Peredvizhniki
The exhibition Sprezzatura – Fifty Years of Italian Painting (1860-1910) is the third installment in the series of exhibitions exploring ‘Art Around 1900 in an International Perspective,’ in which the Drents Museum calls attention to European artists’ groups from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Previous exhibitions in this series were The Glasgow Boys - Scottish Impressionism 1880-1900 (2015) and Peredvizhniki – Russian Realism and Repin (2016).
