Tonia Stieltjes
Jan Sluijters
Amsterdam (1919)
Tonia
To compensate the distracting effect of the bold, bright red flowers, Jan Sluijters brought balance in this painting with the impressive cabinet on the left and the recurring reds that show up in Tonia Stieltjes' ring, in her clothes and in the tablecloth. Sluijters was fascinated by her appearance and painted her at least a dozen times. In Amsterdam Tonia Stieltjes was a well-known figure. She fought for women's rights and their right to vote and was the first and only woman of colour to chair the domestic servants' union. At the age of 38 she moved to Paris, where she advised her good friend Piet Mondriaan on his art work.
