Drents Museum presents unique overview exhibition of icon Amrita Sher-Gil
The Drents Museum is the first museum in the Netherlands to present a major exhibition of Amrita Sher-Gil, the founder of modern Indian art.
“Europe belongs to Picasso, Matisse, Braque, and many others. India belongs solely to me.” With these words, the Hungarian-Indian Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941) described her unique place in the art world. Despite her short life—she lived only 28—she left behind an impressive and influential oeuvre: a powerful blend of European modernist influences and Indian colors, themes, and stories.
Starting March 22, 2026, we will exhibit approximately sixty paintings and drawings, on loan from the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi. The exhibition traces her development: from her Parisian period to the works in which she captures the power and beauty of daily life in India.
Her paintings are considered part of national heritage and rarely leave India. Amrita Sher-Gil’s last exhibition in Europe was almost twenty years ago.
The exhibition Amrita Sher-Gil - "Europe Belongs to Picasso, India belongs to me" runs from March 22 to September 20, 2026.
