Statement regarding the Preliminary Hearing of the suspects in the art theft at the Drents Museum
Today, two suspects in the violent attack on our museum, during which the golden helmet of Coțofenești and the three golden bracelets were stolen, appeared before court. It was an unprecedented assault in the more than 170 years of the Drents Museum's existence.
We sincerely hope that those involved, come to realize the immense harm they have caused to so many people in Romania, in the Netherlands, and around the world. The theft has had a profound impact—first and foremost on our staff, on our colleagues at the National History Museum in Bucharest, and on the museum community as a whole. It would be a great step, also in the own interest of people involved, if they ensure the swift and safe return of these national treasures of Romania. This is European cultural heritage that belongs to all of us and must remain accessible to everyone, including future generations. That is why art theft carries such severe penalties.
We again wish to express our deep gratitude to the Public Prosecution Service, the Dutch police, and all national and international law enforcement agencies involved. Their relentless dedication to solving this case is ongoing. What was shared this morning regarding the investigation is impressive and strengthens our belief that the helmet of Coțofenești and the three bracelets will soon be recovered.
On the golden helmet of Coțofenești, two eyes are depicted. They were likely intended to ward off the Evil Eye, protecting both the helmet and its wearer. For centuries, they did so successfully. Let us hope they continue to do so— for Romania, and for all of us.
