Studio DM

The Drents Museum wants to be a place not only for art that has already been created, but also for art that still needs to be created.

The Drents Museum not only wants to be a place for art that has already been made, but also for art that has yet to be made. In our artist residence Studio DM we offer artists a place to live and work for a time. This house near the museum has a studio space and is a perfect base from which to find inspiration in the landscape of Drenthe or in the museum. We welcome artists for a short or longer period for an artist residency.

Museum of the makers

The Drents Museum's art collection contains a lot of artists’ working materials. For example, a large part of the art collection 1885-1935 consists of studio materials donated by the Stichting Schone Kunsten rond 1900. Think of sketchbooks, plaster work, lithographic stones, academy studies, palettes and painting boxes. The contemporary realism collection also actively collects in the field of studio practice. Within this, there is a strong connection with the art academies in Groningen and Leipzig. In addition, the self-portrait is an important part of the collection. Together, all these objects provide a glimpse behind the scenes of the artist's creative process and studio practice. We also offer a platform for young artists through the Young Culture Club.

Studio DM

In 2020, a long-cherished dream was fulfilled. Thanks to a legacy from a private collector and support from the Stichting Steunfonds Drents Museum, the museum was able to set up its own artist residence. We want to offer a platform for emerging talent, but also for established artists looking to further develop their work. The museum's exhibitions, buildings, collection and expertise can provide a source of inspiration in the creative process. The beautiful Drenthe landscape is just a stone's throw away. This fully furnished house with garden in the Kloosterstraat near the museum is made available free of charge to professional artists from home and abroad.

What does Studio DM look like?

The modern house built in 1935 features a spacious living room, a kitchen, four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a garden facing southeast. The attic is set up as a studio space. The house is located on Kloosterstraat in the historic centre of Assen, around the corner from the museum. Studio DM is easily accessible and is within walking distance of the city centre and train station. There is a parking space in front of the house. In the house, murals have been left in various places by artists who stayed there in recent years. Former guests of Studio DM include Charlotte Schleiffert and Jeroen Kuster, Matthias Weischer, Tamara Muller, Merline Marell and Robert Seidel.

What is the selection procedure?

  • The Drents Museum offers (visual) artists the opportunity to stay in Studio DM for a short or longer period. The period depends on the request and the offered program.
  • The application consists of a CV/portfolio and content plan with motivation and planning (max. 4 A4). This should at least include a connection with (the collection of) the museum and/or a connection with (the landscape of) Drenthe.
  • The plan is discussed by the director and chief curator. Based on the application, a decision is made about the period, the program and any reciprocal contributions.
  • If you are chosen, the stay is free of charge. Together, we will look at a suitable contribution, such as a lecture or an open house.
  • Interested? Send your request to info@drentsmuseum.nl, attn. Annemiek Rens, chief curator.
