Drents Museum acquires work by Neo Rauch thanks to NAM

Through a donation from NAM, the Drents Museum in Assen has been able to purchase Das Dreibein, a painting by German artist Neo Rauch (1960). The 2024 work will be the centerpiece of the major retrospective exhibition Hotspot Leipzig – Highlights from the Collection, which opens to the public on 15 November 2025.

NAM donation of 500,000 euros to Support Fund
The purchase was made possible because NAM — in consultation with the museum — decided to allocate the €500,000 check it donated to the Drents Museum in 2022, on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, to the Drents Museum Support Fund. The original goal of the 2022 donation was to help finance the planned renovation of the museum’s main entrance. More than two years later, however, this project has been halted for permit-related reasons. With the donation to the Support Fund, the Drents Museum was able to acquire the Neo Rauch painting and will also be able to make other future art acquisitions.

No extension of sponsorship

At the same time, NAM has decided not to extend its 50-year (main) sponsorship, but instead to join the Drents Museum’s business club.

Martijn van Haaster, NAM Director: “It is wonderful that with this donation we can still give the museum a positive boost in a different way. We look back with pride and gratitude on a fantastic 50-year relationship with the museum, for which we are also grateful to them. We will continue to hold the museum in high regard as a member of the business club.”

Harry Tupan, General Director of the Drents Museum: “It is fantastic that we are able to use this generous donation to add important works such as Neo Rauch’s Das Dreibein to our collection. We are incredibly grateful for the way NAM has supported us for 50 years, making possible major exhibitions such as Viva la Frida! and On the Road with Vincent. We warmly welcome NAM as a member of our business club.
