Visit our exhibition Ode to Amrita Sher-Gil – Masterpieces from Dutch Museums . The Drents Museum, together with 23 other Dutch museums, presents an exhibition about identity, freedom, connection, and love. With works by Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh, Toorop, Corbijn, and Rembrandt, among others.

Ode to Amrita Sher-Gil

The exhibition brings together over 50 works of art: paintings, drawings and photography, spanning from the seventeenth century until now. Together they bring a Dutch introduction on the work and legacy of Amrita Sher-Gil. The decor is designed for the postponed exhibition ''Amrita Sher-Gil - Europe belongs to Picasso, India belongs to me.''

The four most important themes in Sher-Gil's life (identity, freedom, connection and love) are the main focus in this new, temporary exhibition. Ode to Amrita Sher-Gil shows works that have never been shown before, including Charley Toorop, Henri Matisse, Marlene Dumas, Natasja Kensmil, Tryntsje Nauta, Isaac Israëls, Kees van Dongen, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Jan Mankes, Raquel van Haver, Peggy Kuiper, Anton Corbijn, Rembrandt and Vincent van Gogh.

'Europe belongs to Picasso, Matisse and many others. India belongs only to me.'
These are the words used by the Hungarian-Indian Amrita Sher-Gil (Budapest 1913 - Lahore 1941) to describe her unique position in the world of art. She only lived 28 years, but left behind an impressive and influential oeuvre in which European styles are combined with Indian colors, themes and stories. Her art is still in development when Sher-Gil passes away.

The exhibition ''Amrita Sher-Gil - Europe belongs to Picasso, India belongs to me'' was scheduled to open march 22, with 60 paintings and artworks from the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi. The Indian government decided last minute that the collection isn't able to travel to the Netherlands due to the geopolitical developments around Iran. Museums from all over the Netherlands came to our help and lent out works of art.
